CrossFit COMO Athletes:
Yesterday, The CrossFit Open has officially opened for registration! What is the CrossFit Open? It’s the first stepping stone to making it to the CrossFit Games. Read more about it below.
The 2014 season begins with the worldwide Open competition. Everyone in the world is invited to compete in five workouts over five weeks, posting their scores online in real time. Last year, almost 140,000 athletes competed in the Open.
Every Open workout needs to be validated to count. Competitors will have two options to validate their performances. They can work out at a local affiliate, where they will be judged in person, or they can submit video evidence of their performance to the entire community. There is no limit to the number of attempts an athlete can make, provided the score is submitted prior to the close of each week.
Competitors will be ranked both worldwide and by region. The fittest 48 men, 48 women, and 30 teams from each region will earn invitations to one of 17 Regionals. This is the first chance athletes will have in 2014 to establish their international standings.
The CrossFit Games stand alone as the ultimate test of fitness. No test, regardless of its lofty claims, can grant legitimate title to the best without first providing access to all. The Open is a truly “open” competition. Anyone from anywhere can participate.
After the Open, the fittest from each of 17 regions around the world move on to the next phase of the season—Regionals. Athletes and spectators will gather in masses to watch CrossFit competition in a live format. Under the critical eye of Level 1 judges and in front of hundreds of cheering spectators, each region’s best athletes will battle for a few precious Games-qualifying spots.
Q: I’m not going to The CrossFit Games, why should I register for the CrossFit Open?
A: There are so many answers to it, let me write a few.
1) Not all of us have aspirations to compete at the highest level, but there are a few of us that do. As a community, it’s our job to help encourage, challenge, and compete with each other to bring out the best in us. It’s our duty!
2) A Right of Passage. Last year was my first official CrossFit Open, I was a few weeks off a broken ankle, and I was fortunate enough to compete. I had zero lung capacity the first WOD and it was extremely tough, but it was an absolutely amazing experience.
3) You are awesome. Period. You get to compete with the best in the world. Where else do you get to see your name on a leaderboard with the best athletes in the sport?
4) It’s going to be an AMAZING community event. (See the details below).
5) Test your fitness

The CrossFit Open at CrossFit COMO
The CrossFit Open is 5 weeks long and begins on Thursday, February 27. Each and every Thursday until March 25, CrossFit will release the Open WOD to the public.
Each and every Friday, following the WOD announcement, CrossFit COMO will host the Open WOD for all athletes. This will begin on Friday at 6:30 pm, which means we will not have the normal 6pm WOD during those 5 weeks. Depending on the number of athletes, we will have multiple heats. If you’re not WODding, but would like to watch, please come out and feel free to bring your families and friends! During/After the WOD, we’ll be hanging out, drinking beer(BYOB), and having an awesome time!
If you’re an athlete and want to get multiple opportunities at the WOD, we will have additional open gym times for that each weekend.
