2016 CrossFit Intramural Open

Last year, CrossFit COMO introduced the Intramural Open to kick off the 2015 CrossFit Open, and this year we’re doing it all over again.

How it works

If you’re unfamiliar with the CrossFit Open, it’s CrossFit’s largest annual online competition with over 275,000 people registered from around the world in 2015 and the 1st stepping stone to The CrossFit Games, the ultimate test of fitness. Workouts are released each Thursday night for 5 weeks.  Read more about The Open. For most of us, The Open is a time to see how we’ve improved our fitness in the past year and push outside our comfort zones. Our community comes together and forms an amazing bond during this time. We go into battle each Friday Night with our teams as we compete in our version, The CrossFit COMO Intramural Open.

The CrossFit COMO Intramural Open

For five consecutive weeks on Friday Nights, we host The Open at CrossFit COMO in an intramural team format. The event kicks off at 6:30 pm each week and athletes will represent one of four teams. The teams will earn points for participating in a variety of activities listed below. What are you competing for? The coveted CrossFit COMO Intramural Cup.

How to Participate / Athlete Draft

Each athlete that registers on The CrossFit Games website is eligible to be drafted. A link to register is below. On one of the nights prior to the open, the four primary coaches (Mike, Doug, Nate and Nick) will get together and draft athletes to their teams. Then we will announce teams at the conclusion of that evening and this is where the fun begins. Teams will form private facebook groups and begin planning their team t-shirts, spirit award ideas and other fun stuff.

Scoring

Scoring will be based on the following factors.

Attendance: 

  • 1 point for completing the workout
  • 1 point for recording a score
  • 2 bonus points per team if 80% of the team participates on Friday

Spirit:

  • Team team that shows up each week with the best energy, costumes, supports others in the event, and more wins 5 points for that week.

Weekly Challenge:

  • Each week there will be a weekly challenge for the teams to complete. If your team completes the challenge, they will be awarded the points that challenge is worth.

BONUS Points: Throughout the open, there will be opportunities for teams to win bonus points. There will be 5 points awarded to each team that has 90% of their athletes attend the final workout and party WOD 16.5.

Prizes

The coveted Intramural Open Champion’s Cup is up for grabs this year, but the previous year’s winner, Head Coach, Nate Davenport, Team B.A.C.O.N. has a message for you. The winner will be announced at our annual CrossFit COMO Formal.

Prepping for The Open / Don’t be Nervous

Every year, I get athletes nervous about participating in The Open. Don’t be nervous, The Open is an amazing experience and we have been preparing for this for the entire year, but definitely focusing on it the last few months. If you end up not being able to do a movement, there is a scaled division that you can participate it each week at your choosing. In addition to getting prepared for The Open, we are going to be offering a new program titled DOMINATE THE OPEN. These skill sessions are designed to help you learn the ins and outs of the most commonly found movements in The Open and over a 4-6 week time frame, develop these skills to fill in any holes you have in your game. Details will be announced very soon. Finally, your primary coach is a great resource to work 1 on 1 with you to develop these skills and get you prepared to help contribute to your team. If you are unable to make the Friday Night workout and still want to participate in that weeks event, you’ll need to schedule a 1 on 1 session with your primary coach or attend our “Open Make Up WOD” by purchasing a CrossFit Open punch card.
