I’m Melissa and I’m from Columbia, Missouri. I am 26 years old and I would be honored if you would share my story! I have attached a picture to show my progress. On the left is me on my very first day at CrossFit COMO and on the right is me today, October 24, 2013.
When I started CrossFit in May 2013, I had one big goal. I didn’t know what it would take or how long it would take to get there, but I knew I wanted to be under 200 pounds. I had spent the last 7 years at 220-260 pounds and miserable. After weeks of watching a friend (trainer at my box) post videos of her lifts on facebook, I decided I wanted to try it out. I wanted to be like her, lift like her, look like her, smile like her after a PR. She was my inspiration.
So, I went.
My first day at CrossFit. My nerves were a wreck. I was literally shaking from head to toe as I filled out and signed the liability waiver. I was surrounded by fit, gorgeous people. What was I thinking? What had I just gotten myself into? Turn and run! There is no way you can do this! But I didn’t. I stayed. Thought I was going to die during the warm up, little did I know at the time that it was merely that. Was relieved when it was over, thinking that wasn’t so bad, I could do this. And then he started to explain the WOD.
I almost had a panick attack. Thought to myself I can’t move another inch without passing out. What does he mean we haven’t even started the WOD! So, I waited until he was done with his shpeal and then quietly pulled him aside to tell him I was leaving and I wasn’t cut out for this crazy CrossFit stuff! He literally told me I wasn’t going anywhere. Lol. Told me he really wanted me to do at least one round of the AMRAP before I left. After a few short tears on my part, he convinced me to stay. I was only able to do one round in 6 minutes. But I felt good about myself that I was able to any of it. So, I did tire flips with the group as a cool down. I had the smallest tire and I could only do a few before I was spent.
Now, it’s five and a half months later and I just did 100 tire flips as a warm up was one of my trainers. I am doing things I never thought I could do and I have never been happier!! On October 23rd, I stepped on the scale and weighed in at 199 pounds! It felt amazing to finally be in Onderland!! But, I am not done! I have just begun. I still haven’t been able to RX a WOD and I still can’t even do a strict RX pushup or pull up. But I have learned that I am an athlete and I will do what it takes to reach my goals! I am blessed and honored to have such a wonderful and amazing team of trainers at CrossFit COMO. You couldn’t ask for a more motivating and inspiring group of people to work with and I feel like I owe them my life. Who knows where I would be without them!
