What brought you to CrossFit? What was your first impression?
As a former competitive swimmer and runner, I have always enjoyed a challenge. When I was told by a friend of mine, that there was a new CrossFit box opening in Columbia, I just knew that I had to give it a try. My first class at CrossFit COMO was back in May 2013. I was welcomed to the judgment free zone of the coaching staff and left feeling more accomplished than I had from any workout that I had at the gym in the past 5 years. Not only did I tackle my fear of doing a 20″ box jump, but I also was reminded that I was an athlete and could do more than I thought was possible. I am thankful for the opportunity I was provided by Mike and the little nudge of encouragement that he gave me when I doubted myself.
What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
Interestingly enough, my biggest accomplishment is not what happened inside the box. It was what happened outside of the box. Once I started Crossfit, I realized (through stomachaches, exhaustion, soreness, etc.) that I could not continue the lifestyle that I had previously. I had to change my eating habits, recover and fuel as an athlete, and make sure that I was getting enough sleep at night. Despite the fact that I had always worked out, these were things that I never made a priority. Crossfit forced me to make them a priority and in turn I started to see the results that I wanted to see. That is, increase in muscle, decrease in fat, and more energy!
What are you working on now?
The great thing about Crossfit is that there is always something that you can work on and be better at. Right now I am putting a heavy focus on improving my bodyweight movements and being able to do them consistently. It took me almost a year to be able to get one pull-up and I know that it is only the beginning. Next comes chest-to-bar pull-ups, muscle-ups, ring dips, and the list goes on!
