Reflecting on the 2017 CrossFit Open

Every year the CrossFit Open ascends upon our gym and every year it’s a super exciting time. After four years of hosting this, I know what to expect and yet, every year I am surprised, humbled, encouraged and I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude at the conclusion.

I’m so damn inspired each and every Friday night. When people from all walks of life, step through the door and challenge themselves. Nearly half of those who were participating were competing in their very first Open! That is truly remarkable and I am blessed that we got to go through this experience together.

Before I talk specifically about the workouts, I want to acknowledge all the people that made this event successful.

To the participants, thank you for stepping outside your comfort zone and challenging yourself. These past five weeks have been amazing and you have inspired me beyond words. Seeing someone achieving their first toes-to-bar, first pull-up, or maybe doing their first Open workout Rx, what a wonderful experience and I am thankful that I got to share that with you.

To the volunteers and judges, thank you for motivating, judging, organizing, cleaning, and all of the other tasks you did each night. I know each of us who participated are thankful for the words of encouragement during those moments of fatigue.

To our spectators, thank you for coming out and cheering for us! You may not realize how good it feels to hear those strong words of encouragement while we’re contemplating picking up the bar, picking up a jump rope, or jumping to the bar.

To our photographers, Don & Connie Sides, Lydia Hunt and Heath Cajandig, thank you for capturing these amazing moments. I know a lot of time goes into each event both during and afterwards. I know you’ve brought many smiles to the faces of each of us. We are thankful for that.

To the CrossFit COMO team, Kim, Chris, Nate, Meghan, Lisa, Brea, Joe and Jovan, thank you. I know what it takes to make this place work each and every day and then to add on all the responsibilities of The Open. It’s incredible what you are able to accomplish and thank you for helping us create such an amazing experience for the CrossFit COMO family.

The Workouts

This year we got to meet the dumbbell. While we haven’t had much training with the dumbbell in the past, we have been using similar movements with kettlebells. When we learned we needed dumbbells for The Open, we went out and invested in sets of 10s, 20s, 35s and 50s.

17.1 – Dumbbell Snatches and Box Jumps
This was an absolute brutal way to open the 2017 season. It absolutely wrecked me for about 5 days. It was an incredible challenge and a great way to say hello to the dumbbell.

17.2 – Walking lunges, toes-to-bar/muscle-ups and power cleans
We got to hang out with the dumbbells again and while that was exciting we also got to experience some gymnastics movements.

17.3 – Chest-to-bars and Squat Snatches
More chest-to-bars and less snatches that got heavier in weight. This wod got spicy pretty quick and gave you bonus time if you completed a round in each of the 4 minutes.

17.4 – The Chipper (deadlift, wall-ball shots, row and handstand push-ups)
This is our repeat workout and let me tell you, it was still awful the second time around. The most fun we had in the gym in a long time with our first glow party. Check out the photos!

17.5 – Thrusters and Double Unders
While they weight wasn’t an issue, the amount of reps was challenging. This was a lung burner for sure and required me to kick off my shoes at the end.

The 2017 CrossFit Open was awesome. I hope each of you learned something about yourself, got a chance to grow as a person, build relationships. While the workouts were fun, the after parties were more fun and a great way for us to celebrate our successes.
